The negotiations on a Legally Binding Agreement (LBA) on forests in Europe were closed early in the morning of Saturday, 9 November, in Geneva. The Resumed Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a LBA on Forests in Europe was hosted by the Government of Switzerland on 7-8 November.

The Resumed fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe started today in Geneva, Switzerland. Almost 160 participants, representing 38 countries, the European Union, 14 observer organizations, and 1 observer country (the United States of America) are taking part in the two day session negotiations.

At the Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to agree a Legally Binding Agreement on forests in Europe, held in Warsaw, Poland from 10-14 June, good progress was made on the draft text of the convention that will ensure Europe’s forests are sustainably managed. The text is now very close to a final version with a limited number of outstanding points to be resolved. The desire of the participating parties is for an agreement that will recognize the importance of forests and the multiple economic, social, cultural and environmental benefits they provide.

Ahead of the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe (10 -14 June 2013 Warsaw, Poland) the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) in cooperation with the FOREST EUROPE Liaison Unit Madrid and the Economic and Social Committee of the EU provided an opportunity for a stakeholders discussion on key issues related to the legally binding agreement on forests in Europe (LBA) as well as on possible stakeholders’ participation in the future LBA. The stakeholders meeting took place in the afternoon on May 23, at the premises of the Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, Belgium.
